Atmosphere above all – and rightly so!

Attention, psych fans! THE DELAYED from Rosenheim serve up a carefully crafted psychedelic feast for all retro connoisseurs on their self-titled debut album. The band was formed back in 2016 – in true style – in a garage. It took a while for the current lineup to come together, but they’ve already played selected shows and festivals, sharing stages with top-tier acts like WUCAN and DEWOLFF.

These and other notable names they’ve performed alongside speak volumes about the quality of their music. And indeed, the sound fully lives up to what the artwork and logo promise: authentic psychedelic rock with a distinct retro flavor. The production fits the genre perfectly – just the right amount of reverb, beautifully recorded guitars, and a crisp-sounding snare drum all contribute to a late-‘60s/early-‘70s atmosphere.

If you're into the aforementioned DEWOLFF, or bands like SPIRAL SKIES and THE SONIC DAWN, you’re in for a treat. Fans of the later DOORS era or the almost forgotten DARK will also find plenty to enjoy here. I especially appreciate that THE DELAYED open the album with a calm, atmospheric track ("Spirit Of The Universe") – the relaxed vocals float effortlessly above the mix.

Blues, proto-doom, and garage rock influences are seamlessly woven into the album’s sound. If, like me, you’re a fan of BLACK SABBATH’s debut, you’ll instantly fall in love with "Demon’s Bargain". Meanwhile, "Blood Harvest" shifts the focus to riff-driven guitar work – a real treat for guitar lovers.

While I’d argue that the first half of the album is slightly stronger in terms of songwriting, all eight tracks captivate with their consistent mood and vibe. A clear recommendation for all psychedelic rock enthusiasts – and those who aspire to become one!
